Two faculty members of the UP School of Library and Information Studies presented their papers at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) 2017 in Wrocaw, Poland last August 19-25 2017.
Professors Iyra S. Buenrostro-Cabbab, a PhD candidate of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and Johann Frederick A. Cabbab, a PhD candidate of the University of South Africa, presented their paper entitled Persistent Resistance: Libraries in the Philippines and their Fight for Freedom and Peoples Rights.* The paper focused on the roles of three institutions in collecting and preserving documentary evidences during and after the Martial Law under the Marcos regime. Featured in their report are the Main Library of the University of the Philippines Diliman, the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines and the Bantayog ng mga Bayani. The duos research work was one of the five papers presented in the session on Libraries in Times of Crisis: Historical Perspectives. <i>American Libraries</i> magazine also prominently featured the presentation of Profs. Cabbab and Buenrostro-Cabbab in the magazines coverage of the WLIC.**
Prof. Buenrostro-Cabbab also presented another paper entitled From Collecting to Tracing Documentary Realities: The Intertextuality of New Society.*** This paper examined state-produced publications during Martial Law through intertextuality, or the process of identifying or establishing relationships between content of written works.
Aside from the paper presentations, the Philippine delegation at the IFLA WLIC 2017 also included UP SLIS faculty members Prof. Sonia M. Pascua, Prof. Salvacion M. Arlante and Ms. Elvira B. Lapuz.
