UP SLIS Faculty Participate in Academic Engagements at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia

Assistant Professors Yhna Therese Santos and Mark Santos of the UP School of Library and Information Studies (UP SLIS) participated in a series of academic engagements at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in Surabaya, Indonesia, this October. The visit included guest lectures, institutional meetings, and participation in an international conference.`

On October 14, Asst. Prof. Yhna Therese Santos delivered a guest lecture on information privilege and scholarly communication at the Department of Information and Library Science under UNAIR's Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP). Asst. Prof. Mark Anthony Santos also delivered a guest lecture on the IFLA Library Reference Model at the same department. During the visit, the two faculty members also met with UNAIR FISIP LIS faculty members Dr. Faisal Fahmi and Prof. Zulfatun Sofiyani, as well as FISIP Dean Dr. M. Muttaqien. Several faculty members from Universiti Malaya's (UM) Department of Library and Information Science, who were visiting UNAIR during the same period, were also part of the discussions. The meeting became an opportunity to explore possible faculty and student exchange programs, research collaborations, and other joint academic activities involving the three LIS institutions.

On October 15, both UP SLIS faculty members participated in the 8th International Conference on Vocational Innovation and Applied Sciences (ICVIAS 2026), hosted by UNAIR's Faculty of Vocational Studies, where both contributed posters. Asst. Prof. Yhna Therese Santos, who also served as the conference's International Poster Co-Chair, co-authored a poster on quality assurance with Mr. Ferl Arceo, Quality Assurance Staff of UP SLIS. Meanwhile, Asst. Prof. Mark Anthony Santos contributed a poster on health sciences librarianship in Philippine LIS education. SLIS MLIS student Frances Calceta also presented her paper, “The Fear of Posting Cringe: Self-Censorship and Information Loss in a Panoptic Information Landscape,” during a parallel session and was also awarded as best presenter in their session.

The conference brought together diverse research on technology, education, information systems, libraries, and other applied fields, providing a platform for interdisciplinary exchange and scholarly collaboration.

Moving forward, UP SLIS hopes to sustain the connections strengthened during the visit and pursue more fruitful collaborations with fellow LIS institutions in the region.
