SLIS Welcomes New Faculty Members

UP SLIS is delighted to welcome Asst. Prof. James Kevin de Jesus and Assoc. Prof. Joseph M. Yap, PhD, to the faculty!

Assoc. Prof. Joseph M. Yap earned his Ph.D. in Library and Information Science at the Doctoral School of Literary Studies, Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. He holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Library and Information Science from the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of the Philippines Diliman. A distinguished scholar, Joseph is recognized for his professional excellence and contributions to the field of library and information science. In 2024, he received the Professional Excellence Award from the Society for Library Professionals and the Special Libraries Association Asian Community, as well as the Professional Award from the Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines; in 2023, he was honored with the Excellence Award in Librarianship (Global Filipino Practice and Service) by the Philippine Federation of Professional Associations. His research primarily examines the civic roles and responsibilities of librarians in the context of information crises and disorders. He has published extensively on topics such as information literacy, reference services, and collection management, with work appearing in leading peer-reviewed journals including IFLA Journal, Public Library Quarterly, Digital Library Perspectives, Information Discovery and Delivery, The Reference Librarian, Journal of Information Literacy, Health Information & Libraries Journal, and Journal of Library Administration.

Asst. Prof. James Kevin De Jesus earned his Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) and Master in Archives and Records Management (MARM) from the UP School of Library and Information Studies (UP SLIS). He is a librarian and archives and records management professional with experience in archives and records organization, assessment, and digitization projects involving government agencies, private organizations, and archival collections. He previously served as the Extension Coordinator of UP SLIS and as a Project Associate of Library-Bayanihan Inc. He currently serves as a member of the UP Diliman Records Management Committee – Technical Working Group. His professional interests include archives and records management, digital preservation, and community archives.

Dr. Yap and Asst. Prof. De Jesus bring to UP SLIS a rich diversity of academic, professional, and practice-based experience that will further strengthen the School's teaching, research, and extension initiatives. Their expertise spans libraries, archives, records management, information literacy, digital preservation, and community engagement, providing our students with opportunities to learn from faculty whose work bridges scholarship and professional practice. We are excited to welcome them to the UP SLIS community and look forward to the knowledge, perspectives, and mentorship they will bring to the next generation of library and information professionals.
