SLIS hosts SARBICA Foundational Course in Archives and Records Management

UP SLIS hosted 47 early-career archivists from all the national archives of ASEAN member states in a four-week training course throughout August 2022. The course aimed to provide the participants with the essential knowledge in managing and preserving archival records in the Southeast Asian region and discussed key concepts and principles in archival theory, paradigms, and ethics.

Participants were exposed to the multiverse of southeast asian archival theory and practice through a series of lectures by UP SLIS archives faculty members Prof. Mary Grace Golfo-Barcelona, Prof. Iyra Buenrostro-Cabbab, Prof. Benedict Salazar Olgado, and Prof. Jonathan Isip along with case studies by guest speakers from the National Archives of Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Thailand. Attendees also had a chance to interact through Zoom and through a learning management system, encouraging closers ties between the different archives in the region.

This course was funded by the International Council on Archives Programme Committee (ICA PCOM) and organised by the Southeast Asia Regional Branch of the ICA (SARBICA), the National Archives of Singapore, and the UP School of Library and Information Studies.
