Our faculty and students energetically disseminated knowledge in workshops and conferences during the second quarter of 2023.


Asst. Prof. Kathleen Lourdes B. Obille co-presented with Marina L. Giron of the Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades in the Mid-Year Conference of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) held online from April 11-13, 2023. Their paper "reports the findings of the investigation on the sense-making of teachers during the transition to remote learning drawing from the experiences of the teachers who were interviewed for this study as well as the experiences of the researchers who are also teachers. The analysis is anchored on the sense-making theory of Weick within the purview of organizational management and of Dervin within information practices both as a methodology and metatheory." 




Asst. Prof. Paul Jason V. Perez, along with ASIS&T SIG-III Officers and members, presented in a panel entitled "How to Better Engage with ASIS&T Members? Lessons Learned from SIG-III's Activities During the Covid-19 Pandemic" during the 1st Mid-Year Conference of ASIS&T. Panel members include Dr. Devendra Potnis of the University of Tennessee Knoxville, Dr. Bhakti Gala of the Central University of Gujarat, Dr. Vanessa Reyes of the University of South Florida, Dr. Manika Lamba of the University of Delhi, Dr. Nosheen Warraich of the University of the Punjab, and Dr. Leili Seifi of the University of Birjand.



Asst. Prof. Jonathan Isip delivered an online seminar on managing digital records for the UP Diliman HRDO on the 24th of April 2023. This was the second half of a two-part training series meant to improve records management and data protection in UP. Asst. Prof. Johann Frederick A. Cabbab and Dr. Danilo M. Baylen published a chapter on "Starting a Conversation on Integrating Filipino Childrens Literature in Teaching University Courses" in the book "Global Childrens Literature in the College Classroom" edited by Sara Austin and Tanja Nathanael. Assoc. Prof. Iyra Buenrostro-Cabbab, PhD virtually presented a paper on "Incorporating Environmental Literacy, Social Responsibility, and Advocacy into the Archives and Records Management Program Through Student Engagement and Reflective Practice" at the 27th SEAPAVAA Conference held in Pattaya, Thailand from 8-13 May 2023.

SLIS was also represented in-person at the SEAPAVAA General Assembly by lecturer and MLIS student Mr. Martin Julius Perez, who also presented a poster about his work at the Department of Foreign Affairs Archives and its photo collections.

Senior lecturer Atty. Senando Angelo Santiago gave a webinar on AI Technology: Challenges and Opportunities in the Library Services on 26 May 2023 for the UPLB Library Staff Training and Development Committee. Asst. Prof. Rhea Rowena U. Apolinario gave the keynote for the UP Library Science Alumni Association's (UPLSAA) annual conference, ALAM 2023, held online on 2-3 June 2023. The conference had the theme Tanglaw: Fostering the Principles of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) in LAMs Practices, Research, and Services.



SLIS celebrated International Archives Week 2023 and the 75th Anniversary of the International Council on Archives with two lectures looking into the past and future of archives.


Dr. Francis Navarro, Director of the Ateneo de Manila University Archives, gave a talk on the paleography of Spanish-language records in the Philippines. 



Concurrently, Asst. Prof. Jonathan Isip showcased tools and toolkits for digital preservation at PLAI NCRLC's webinar on "Building a Sustainable Digital Preservation Program in Libraries".




Assoc. Prof. Iyra Buenrostro-Cabbab, PhD and Asst. Prof. Jonathan Isip gave lectures as part of the 2023 National Library Board of Singapore (NLB) Library & Archives Learning Series on 12 June 2023. Dr. Buenrostro-Cabbab discussed trends and issues in collections care while Asst. Prof. Isip explored challenges and trends in digital preservation.



Asst. Prof. Jonathan Isip facilitated a records management workshop for the UP Diliman College of Mass Communication on 19 June 2023.



Asst. Prof. Jonathan Isip also delivered a training on records management and data protection for the Department of Science and Technology Region V on 23 June 2023. DOST V provincial directors and administrators worked diligently to create an inventory and retention schedule for records that facilitate science and technology services in the Bicol region.

Maria Ana Gabriela R. Lising, graduate student of the Master in Archives and Records Management program, delivered her presentation at the AAS in Asia Conference which had the theme, Asia in Motion: Memory, Preservation, and Documentation held in Kyungpook National University, Daegu, South Korea on 24-27 June 2023. Her abstract entitled Archiving the Struggle for Philippine Art: Women as Memory-Keepers of Philippine Art in the Post-War Years, was part of the panel composed of other scholars from Ateneo de Manila University, Ehwa Womans University, and Mindanao State University and was also one of the four abstracts from the Philippines that was granted an AAS-in-Asia Conference Award by the Philippine Studies Group.
