IoT Workshop - Call for Applications

Applications are open for the From Stacks to Sensors: IoT-Driven Innovations in Library and Archives Workshop to be held from 28-30 January 2026 in UP Diliman.

In an era where digital transformation is vital for information institutions, many organizations — particularly in underserved communities — struggle with access to affordable and customized ICT solutions. This project aims to bridge that gap by providing librarians, records managers, and archivists with hands-on training in assembling, troubleshooting, and innovating their own ICT appliances, from low-cost computers to customized library automation tools.

Through a capacity-building workshop, we will empower information professionals to become tech-savvy problem solvers, enhancing their institutions’ digital resilience and sustainability. Participants will identify specific problems in their institutions that IoT solutions can address. Over the course of a year, they will co-develop and test prototypes using ESP32 microcontrollers and other IoT tools to enhance library and archive services.

The workshop is an extension project of the University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies (UP SLIS) and is funded by the 2025 Extension Grant of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development (OVCRD). It aims to benefit 25 participants from from institutions across the Philippines with limited technological resources or expertise in IoT applications.

The project funding covers the following costs for participants:

- Workshop registration

- Microcontrollers and sensors

- Shared accommodation for two nights

- Lunch and snacks during the workshop

The project aims for representation across different regions, particularly outside Metro Manila, to maximise impact. The project also actively promotes the inclusion of women and gender-diverse professionals in ICT training sessions and will give preference to these genders so as to encourage them to take leadership roles in the implementation and dissemination of IoT solutions within their respective institutions.

Interested individuals can submit their applications at https://tinyurl.com/stackstosensors by 30 September 2025 (Tuesday).
