42nd Gabriel A. Bernardo Memorial Lecture

You are cordially invited to the 42nd Gabriel A. Bernardo Memorial Lecture of the University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies (UPSLIS). The lecture will be held remotely on Friday 18 March, 19.00-21.00 PHT or 11.00-13.00 UTC.

We are delighted to welcome our speaker, Dr Andrew Flinn, Reader in Archival Studies and Oral History, UCL, who will give a lecture entitled: Digging where we stand: community and (counter-) archives, oral history and the inevitably political craft of archiving. The lecture will explore themes in community archives, voice and representation, and social justice archives.

Andrew is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Archival Studies and Oral History, Vice-Dean for Postgraduate Research in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and former Director of the Archives Masters programme (2005-2015) in the Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCL). His research interests include community-based archiving, archives and social justice and oral history. Currently Deputy Principal Investigator on the Sloane Lab, one of the AHRCs Towards a National Collection projects, he is also working with Professor Julianne Nyhan (UCL and Darmstadt) to develop research in multimodal digital oral history. Andrew was formerly an Archivist at the National Museum of Labour History/Peoples History Museum, Manchester. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the ICA's Section on Archive Education and has been actively involved in the UK and Ireland Community Archives & Heritage Group since 2005 and Vice-chair since 2012. Recent edited publications include (with J. Bastian, 2020) Community Archives, Community Spaces: heritage, memory and identity and (with Duff, Wallace & Short, 2020) Archives, Recordkeeping and Social Justice.

The GAB Memorial Lecture honours the legacy of Gabriel A. Bernardo, the first Chief Librarian of the University of the Philippines where he also started as a lecturer in library science in 1920 and rose to the rank of full professor in 1935. He retired in 1957 as Emeritus Librarian and Professor of Library Science. A conscientious and devoted scholar, Dr. Bernardo was an eminent bibliographer of Filipiniana and an internationally recognized authority of Philippine and Indonesian folklore.

His contributions to the profession led to him being given the title Doyen of Filipino Librarians by the UPLSAA in 1957. The annual lectures held since 1974 celebrate scholarship in the information professions and features speakers who carry on Bernardo's vision.
