Bernardo Memorial Lecture, with Professor Iris Thiele Isip-Tan of the UP Manila Medical Informatics Unit to discuss about the evolving roles of librarians in health informatics. Dr. Iris Thiele Isip-Tan

Dr. Iris Thiele Isip-Tan is a physician specializing in internal medicine and endocrinology. She began her clinical practice in 2004 while serving as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Medicine without compensation. She served as board member in several professional organizations: Philippine Lipid & Atherosclerosis Society, Philippine Society for the Study of the Aging Male and the Philippine Society for Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism. She worked with these organizations in pushing for her advocacies in chronic disease, diabetes and andropause. Iris was the first graduate of the MS Health Informatics Medical Informatics track and became Chief of the UP Medical Informatics Unit in 2011. Her research work in informatics include mobile health, social media and e-learning. She has been blogging at since 2010, and considers it her living resume. Recognizing the reach of social media, she also began posting health information in Filipino at This page now has more than 50,000 likes and its informative posts are archived at Her story of wanting to use Facebook as a platform for health promotion was the subject of a TedXDiliman talk she delivered in 2015. Iris advocates for the use of the innovative teaching strategies in medical education. Last August 2016, was appointed Director of the UP Manila Interactive Learning Center.

Iris was awarded the first UP System Gawad Pangulo Award for Progressive Teaching and Learning in 2015. Her library of teaching slides and conference presentations can be freely downloaded at She co-founded #HealthXPH in 2013, a weekly tweet chat on the intersection of healthcare, social media and technology and the first Philippines-based health tweet chat registered on Her efforts at health promotion through Facebook & Twitter was recognised by the Philippine College of Physicians in 2014 with the Presidential Award for Social Media Advocacy. She helped organise the first Philippine Healthcare and Social Media Summit in 2015 with the Philippine Council for Health Research & Development. She advocates for patient-centered care and worked with #HealthXPH to get “Patients Included” status ( for the 2016 social media summit, a first in the Philippines. Her insightful blog post, Why does Self-Diagnosis Annoy Doctors ( won the Philippine Blogging Awards Best Blog Post of the Year in 2015 while her blog won People's Choice in the Health & Fitness category.

When she was in grade school at Siena College, Iris was the President of the Junior Librarians Club.
